Year End Blah 2008. Pt4![]() Hello. It is I, DJ Teeth, reporting Live Undead from the Frozen Apple. Yes, if it's true, as Chris says that Stew and Todd are the excelling Valedictorians of the 'Path, I simply haven't made it to class yet. They say the pen is mightier than the sword, but I've been using my axe more lately. Although we share a virtual office, I've met Stew, Todd and Chris live in the flesh at actual festivals of raging steel. Back in 2006, a beer was handed to me and someone said "This is Stew." After Bone Awl finished, we drank about 20 more, finished the bourbon in my pocket and staggered back to the Brooklyn subway, yelling profusely. Days later, I couldn't remember his name. Then somewhere in 2007, I met DePalma in downtown Manhattan at an Unearthly Trance show - the one next to the strip club. I was honored to meet him after reading his then year-end spiel when the LHP was still a nested column. Not as much yelling. Chris and I had both done graphic design for the mighty Outlaw Recordings long before working here, but it was at the Carcass re-union gig in Sayersville, NJ this year that we finally met. After braving the girl-fight at the box-office, we watched Carcass play a real swingin' set at the wonderful Starland. Aftter the show, Chris and I stood in the VFW Hall parking lot pulling our pockets inside out, lamenting the lack of beer outlets under the Jersey moon. Perfunctory: Damaar, Triumph Through Spears of Sacrilege Dead Congregation, Graves Of The Archangels Unearthly Trance, Electrocution Virus, The Black Flux Swedish Death Metal by Daniel Ekeroth Uli Jon Roth, Live in NYC Nifelheim, Live in Hollywood, November 2008 Negative Plane, Live in Brooklyn, Samhain 2008 Those aren't "Live Albums", but maybe they should be. Standing 15 feet away from Uli Roth grinning blissfully whilst ripping through "Sails of Charon" was about as religious an experience a hack like me has ever had. And he smiled at me, ME ! The Evil Twins From Swedish Hell and their group, Nifelheim simply went cuckoo for for Satan for about fifty minutes. Nothing but spikes, leather, racoon make-up and those catchy-ass riffs . . . and lamb heads. I kept yelling for "Into the Morbid Black" to no avail. Florida's loss is New York's gain, as Negative Plane played their debut NYC concert in the shabby environ known as Rocky's Rock Star Bar. No robes or candles on this Samhain event, but plenty of soupy, murky, dusted riffs played by the hands of Mr. Nameless Void. How those guys remember all the changes is beyond me . . . . Much has been said about Dead Congregation's masterpiece. From songcraft to tone to execution, atmosphere and stellar riffs, these guys really have it all. It’s like a ticket to "the void." And once you’re out there, no need to check back in for a latte - just go directly to "The Black Flux" for further, more cinematic alienation. Again: guitar playing and tone. Carl-Michael proves he may be a genius as well as a madman. Vocals have improved vastly too. Hey headbanger, who needs the latest Graham Greene tome when you could be reading about Nirvana 2002's heaviest of demos? Mr. Ekeroth did a feverish job in compiling and chronicling the anecdotes and albums and left no stone unturned enlightening us with "infos" on seemingly every zine and demo to ever be xeroxed in the land of "blonde women and Volvos." Get it now ! Thanks ! [Patrick Delaney]
