Witchrist - Beheaded Ouroborous

 April 18 2011 at 06:23:16 PM

Riddle of the undead… Beheaded Ouroborous came out last year, so it has no doubt already been downloaded by dweebs worldwide. But for those interested in 180g plastics, blood chiseled artwork, and twenty page manuscripts, the recently available vinyl version may warrant further investigation.

Without question, New Zealand’s Witchrist have suitably rendered their vocals incomprehensible to human ears, though how exactly they get that layered drowning reverb effect remains unclear. Instrumentation is shrouded in green fathoms with riffs just audible enough to define the proceedings as “music”, all of it circling an ever-widening pit of total cryptification. Notes are held captive and tortured for amusement by arrogant barbarians. Nothing groove-oriented here, just grotesque carvings on blank silence, downtuned rituals held over bodies frozen with hypnogogia, eyes open, but limbs unable to move, buried in dirt, until almost gaining enough muscle control to crawl out before another shovelful in the face.

Not content with requisite horror/gore references, this is death metal imbued with strong overtones of far east religious occultism, though this facet somewhat tough to recognize amidst threads of Bolt Thrower-like off rhythm arrangements, excepting that lone passage from where a sitar echoes. Previously mentioned manuscript casts dim torch light on various perversions, blood drenched altars, arcane Hindu symbols, samsara, demons, and necrophiliac nun/priest orgies recalling the drunken hallucinations of de Sade. Artwork is suitably primitive in rendering, more complex in blasphemic iconography. Ah, the lyrics are printed here in old E. font, partially scratched out. The words issue foul profanities above and beyond standard goat blood drinking theatrics, but it is sort of difficult to read this fucking thing after eight beers. Maybe I need glasses. Doesn’t matter. Study the text all you want, the question will echo through these infernal arrangements as it always has through suitably dark invocations: how exactly can something be eternally living and still reek of death for endless eons? [That’s centuries to you and me.]

I was thinking about this at work. How CH is the head and tail that connects the snake of Christ and Witch. Pondered what it means to behead an Ouroboros. Will the circle be unbroken? By and by Lord, by and by. I got as far as the idea of CH representing Carbon and Hydrogen, Hydrocarbons, Methane, Octane, etc, before I realized I was dozing off on the clock from Mountain Dew withdrawal. Anyway, came home and ordered this shit on vinyl.
