I guess I shouldn't feel surprised that what these remind me most of is Botch. I can see how the things that made Demilich what they were in the 90's could metastasize to something like this, even if the band is not actually informed about the 'math rock' thing, though I find this doubtful. I can hear Jesus Lizard and Unsane and Don Caballero in some of these so if they're not informed that'd actually be pretty remarkable in itself, kind of a parallel evolution.
However I am not as immediately overjoyed after listening as I expected to be once I read the news. I guess for me this will be make-or-break based on what the thematic and aesthetic focus will be and how it will dress these sounds. Just based purely on the compositions right now, bands like Craw or Breach have debatably taken this sort of music to its artistic conclusion a long time ago. I for one am not looking for variations on this form, but I am sure many others are.
Still, listening the defining Demilich type of riff played in major intervals (check main riff of TROWQ) is a wonderfully odd experience.
