Spooky Fingers: Blood Harvestin'![]() If you want blood… France’s BLOODY SIGN make uneasily progressive Death/Black Metal with primitive/cryptic lyrics that offset queer cover-art that features the band’s logo, some hagio-geometric hocus pocus, and what appears to be the mouth of a pocket pussy. Chaos Echoes is riff driven and seemingly aspires to the whatsit school of “peculiar figures and digressive interludes” championed by DEATHSPELL OMEGA and emulated by oodles of lesser talents. Good and bad, as the “digressive interludes” slow this music’s inertia in confounding ways, as it’s mostly full bore blast in spic ‘n’ span clean ANTAEUS mode with considerably less crunch and/or claustrophobic sonic fascism. Cut this to an EP, please, as the “vignettes” are completely expendable, and good to great songs number exactly three, viz., “Down to Hell,” “For the Unknown,” and “Tongues of Shadows.” And three’s a holy numeral, bros. Have at it. Bloody Sign Chaos Echoes Blood Harvest Valley girl menses soaked UNHOLY LUST (formerly known as exquisitely moniker’d LOS WINOES!) sounds tha Punk’s Not Dead siren but manages to tweak annoying “Blackened Thrash” just enough to maybe get it mentioned alongside MIDNIGHT on some MORE-METAL-BANDS-THAT-SOUND-PUNK m’board thread. At some point these fellas put down POISION IDEA/AGRESSION/SSD records ‘n’ picked up (early) SLAYER ‘n’ VENOM. Fine… dandy… But absorption period’s usually longer than a year or 2. Case/point comes with the spectacularly popular (not really) SATAN’S SATYRS who learned a chord or three, picked up Bathory backpatch along with Stooges’ Raw Power ‘n’ went at it. Jamie “Athenar” Walters (MIDNIGHT) practically penned goddamn Bangers Almanac on storied transition. Walters has dog year age on his side, as so few do, thus a more “authentic” presentation. UNHOLY LUST (name alone sounds like a MIDNIGHT song) offer not so subliminal homage to Walters and his wide load nekro sluts, w/ tunes “She’s a Dead Hunter,” “Torso,” “Body Count.” And that’s ‘bout it, shit. Unholy Lust Taste the Sin through the Fire Blood Harvest Chilean Death Metal dogs GODLESS finger Lewis Latin Dictionary and conjure up record title practically too long for any fuggin’ LP spine. Glory of Rome extends to most song titles, too, which will be quick, but painful, death for anyone predisposed to utilize terms “pretentious” or “douchebag” when faced with the limits of their own mental power. Ecce Homo… is the dirty durty – see/hear AUTOPSY (of course), etc. Ears crusted in resin ‘n’ rancid brew, pernicious flies practically a wailing wall o’ humms ‘round my shitty stereo speakers. Vokillist VDA Irrenmidis does flatulent boar/drowning bovine bit while his bros crank out off-kilter riffs ‘n’ jerky herky riddim sec hijinks that often sounds like slick jazzbos getting off on fartin’ out blastbeats over hemorrhoid rupturing bass. Know these cats are all about hating on the Jesus, but their tunes are so entrapped in the Body and its processes, it’s impossible for me to equate this to ‘thing else but Montezuma’s Revenge for ass-to-mouth fetishists. (And being Dogma’d out as I am, ‘tis zher gute, ja.) Godless Ecce Homo: Post Lux Tenebras Pulsio XIII Ultima Ratio Blood Harvest Locrian are neither Metal nor on Blood Harvest records. But they do make music that’s rightly classified as “noise.” Being such it recalls stunningly paralyzed hangover mornings where some piece of electronic whatsit is activated somehow/somewhere and I am rendered powerless to its inhuman whirlaglug white noise plip plop. And then someone turns the fucking thing off and I’m back to my increasingly more spirited dreams of a black leather clad Kate Winslet. The Crystal World isn’t entirely comprised of this bullshit, but it does feature delicate forays into the quasi-religious doom/drone world of Aquarius Recordsian blah, such as Campbell Kneale and all his “Metal” incarnations. The title track is even more perplexing, as it lays on a heavy VANGELIS/ TANGERINE DREAM (Risky Business OST) vibe, which works well with my black leather clad Kate Winslet dream. Ever made it on a rail train, noizeniks? Locrian The Crystal World Utrecht Nuclear—another Chilean band—are more watered-down throwback Thrash augmented by a vocalist who sounds hilariously like Henry Rollins over-enunciating words like “HATE,” or “PAIN,” or “DEATH.” No sweat off my balls until I hear the phrase, “We’ll fuckin’ kill you now!” every 14 seconds, replete with riffs lifted piecemeal from everything KREATOR/ANTHRAX ever thought about committing to tape. For muscle-bound youth into Affliction tees only. Nuclear Jehovirus Self-released? [Stewart Voegtlin]
