Sabbath Assembly - Restored to One

 June 7 2010 at 04:51:05 AM

Is everybody in? Ceremony’s about to begin… Were world’s ways even mildly predictable, Tarantino would come calling with Hollywood blood money, securing rights to Sabbath Assembly’s “Hymn of Consecration” for inevitable remake of Werewolves on Wheels. Grounding SA’s Restored to One in pop culture recesses makes quick sense given Manson’s Blacks v. Whites Gotterdammerung made motion by “secret messages” propagated by Beatles’ White Album. (Far more here than religious aspect [isn’t there always?] and it’s not solely fortified by multi-directional shibboleths, “Creepy Crawl,” or “Rise.”

Restored to One culls wealth of The Process Church of the Final Judgment mythos for able subject matter, a sorta supra pan-religious power-source that genuflected equally to Christ and Satan. Predictably, Process was sloppily documented by reporters and resigned to black robed Satanic mystics wandering Bay Area streets sniffing out converts. Innumerable connections made to Manson Family; I’ve read Bugliosi’s Helter Skelter an unhealthy number of go-rounds; can’t recall one bit on this DayGlo LaVey crew. But the six-degrees-of-separation keeps the dark bent bending, ya dig, and SA vocalist Jex Thoth, an unfathomable Michelle Phillips-cum-Lizzie Borden amalgam, does little to lighten the program.

Music’s unbearably addictive even without provocative arcane association. Viz., Thoth’s voice works electric narcotic jones, a billion gallon Lethe washing over crepuscular pop’s collective hypothalamus. Primordial Jefferson Airplane and Mamas & Papas filtered white light through Ya Ho Wha 13’s collective beard. Trappings aplenty: Musky leather catsuit, pig blood bath, California dreamin’ through psilocybin throes. Sometimes psych’s amped to Aether, as in “Judge of Mankind,” other times played down to cocktail lounge whisper—“The Power That is Love.” Each track holds same crystalline kineticism harnessed by wealth of wave-riding occultists borne of fire, macrobiotic diet, Jack Nitzsche/Necronomicon tutlage. And Restored to One burns brightly under this little-known power, as disturbingly wanton as “that girl” in your past who called out to Christ in throes of first anal, and profoundly luminescent as last sentence in Joyce’s “The Dead.”

I'll have to investigate; like some of the Jex Thoth stuff.

For the curious...this record is a joint release with Feral House and was inspired by the book about the group, LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH: The Inside Story of The Process Church of the Final Judgment, written by original member Timothy Wyllie and Adam Parfrey.

Blablabla! Stop namedropping "cool" junk for once and focus on the music. You wont give the kids a boner that way, man. Godamnit.

Uh, what does "cool" mean anymore? Anything? Even in quotations? I'm not sure. I was the person who, with Dave Nuss, originally conceived of this musical version of Process Church hymns to accompany the Sabbath Assembly Ritual events we created in New York LA, SF, and Portland. We recreated a Process Church service with altar, robes, ritual and song with the band playing live on stage. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge led the ritual in New York. The record grew out of those events, and the music and the events were directly inspired by the book. The kids in audiences seemed to dig it very much. I might have even sensed a boner or two. Hope you enjoy the Process.

Thanks, Jodi. I have and continue to enjoy the Process. I even get boners now and then too when I'm not busy namedropping "cool" junk. OK, gotta run and focus on the music.
