Krieg - The Isolationist

 December 1 2010 at 10:03:53 PM

Repossessed. It’s been a comparatively quiet four years of estrangement from this entity of ill repute. A relationship which founder Neill Jameson believed during an especially bleak moment that he could do without, in fact proved to be an essential force in holding together his unraveling mental state. Healthier if not happier today, he returns as Krieg on the aptly titled The Isolationist, an album that for all its outward similarities to Joy Division’s Closer, better compliments Krieg’s last outstanding work, The Black House, the metaphorical site of confrontation with both illness and treatment. Within both séance and exorcism, simultaneous emptying and re-filling of violent tendencies, memories and visitations takes place. Recommitment to catharsis which plays back as burning film strip, layers peeled away leaving a loop of blot impressions. Chords stretched and blurred, voice as dire cries falling fathoms deep, desperation carried in a swarm linked together by glowing synthesizer. As a performer on record, Jameson’s voice finds no easy comparison in its inexhaustible ability to swell to agonizing screams. The main distinction, however, remains the songwriting and here he hasn’t so much expanded his limited skills as he has given proof of his strength and consistency. With Sanford Parker behind the gears, The Isolationist offers the most easily endured sound of any Krieg release so far, an oxymoron of clear static that’s turned from pitch black to grey tint. Still as fine a record as any to mar the daylight hours.

A band like Krieg, whose name is German for "war." The title of this album, "The Isolationist," means a person who advocates isolation. Metal scene needs more albums from a band like War, namely an album that adovocates isolation.

An album - namely, an amalgamation of aural output stored on hard media. From a musical ensemble gathered under the moniker 'Krieg'. German word, meaning 'War'. German - namely a language used by the modern descendants of several united Teutonic tribes under the common flag of 'Germany'. Said musical ensemble is recognized as having been absent and subsequently missed for a period of time among the members of the Metal subculture. Metal subculture, namely, a collective term for human beings who express affiliation with the greater gestalt established by individual memes associated with Heavy Metal music.
