Hail of Bullets - ...Of Frost And War

A WWII themed album spearheaded by ex-Pestilence and Asphyx vocalist Martin Van Drunen.
Hail of Bullets’ no frills debut, based on the German Reich’s invasion into and subsequent defeat by the Soviet juggernaut between 1941-43, does its concept justice, but falls fast into the “just add water” approach to Death Metal. Besides Van Drunen’s incomparably sore and desperate vocals, the material here is pretty standard as
…Of Frost And War hews close to a simplified styling of Entombed by way of Edge of Sanity. A less polished sound might have helped disguise some of the more basic tracks. However, even the album’s best cuts, mostly reprised from the group’s 2007 demo (“Ordered Eastward,” “Red Wolves of Stalin,” Advancing Once More,” “General Winter.”), are compromised by ex-Edge frontman Dan Swano’s predictably cushioned, by-the-book production. Revolution, silk gloves etc. The band came for war and got talked down to a snowball fight.
