Gore - Mean Man's Dream

Apropos named Dutch power trio, Gore, sees reissue of ‘80s artifact Mean Man’s Dream via sonic stalwart label FSS. Dusted’s Doug Mosurak, quick to the trigger, already aired the litany of beneficiaries for this outing: Slint, Bitch Magnet, Bastro et al. And he’s definitely on point, as this sorta ur-linear heaviness is pretty much the fons et origo for the wet-behind-the-ears intrso set. This ain’t entirely by the book, though. There’s an evasive damage to Gore’s take on wordless romp. It’s made manifest in deliberate, measured, and often violent takes on featured instrumentation. A few songs in, it’s crush, kill, destroy in every space, crevice, perforation, which ain’t that interesting or provocative in and of itself. The brow raiser being how Gore administers the beatdown: an odd mélange of tribal battery, warbling guitar and tonal bass. 

Pieter De Sury channels Mick Fuckin’ Mars via inhalants and dangerous narcotic diet pills. His axe unglued. Hyperbolic sniffles and scream smears are shaken from the headstock. Fucker sounds like he’s sodomized Divine with vacuum cleaner, recorded the outing and slowed it down to about 15 RPMs. Try laying that shit over water-torture percussion, either same or mighty similar drumb fills showing little need for mutation and just coming at too quick a click. Foreground shows Rob Frey rendering Jah Wobble’s “spite” dub in golden showers of throb and thrash. Shit akin to whole salad days catalogs from Touch & Go and Boner, but it’s anything by easy listening. 

Each piece the struggle. A clash. A concerted, and maniacally focused effort at connection that refuses to come about. A lot of it is just ad hoc, “here it is, fuckers. Let’s see what you can do with it.” Response is in kind, of course. Playing in the dark in separate rooms in different time zones, anticipating bland mimesis and countering with motherfuckin’ nailbombs. Touchstones aplenty: See/hear Herr Brotzmann’s Ah-so pick-up trio on DIY’s Dare Devil; shit, take in entire oeuvres in single sittings of Dr. Know, Aggression and SSD for that matter. It’s a swell way to spend the day, days or week. And, oh, great gawd how lovely it’d be if this template hooked the kids in the gills instead of Sunn’s soporific rays. Yes, honey, we can pine for a droneless world. But only Gore was living it.
