Cauldron Black Ram - Slubberdegullion![]() Olde E. As in EVUL; ie. robbing villages, killing civilians, burning all to the ground. Remember? Outlaws, black market traders, bikers and Motorhead all traced back to that original villain of Christ and crown. Remember Captains Morgan and Kidd? Remember Edward Low? Ever heard of Albert Hicks? The Pirate, ignoble bastard, unwholesome wastrel, and epic drunkard of the seas and coasts - Disneyfied, robbed from history by Hollywood, let down even by a minor trend of Jerry Bruckheimer spawned Metal play-acting that ain’t hardly topped Running Wild. The puffy shirts, the "yo ho, yo ho's". At least one band has managed to avoid these ornaments of parody, not out of snobbery, perhaps not even consciously; can't change your nature afterall. Truly, no Howardian creation of some untrustworthy race of demi-human mongrels hold's a candle to the Australian. And no such species of bred from the bottom cretin is better suited to sing unabashedly of smuggling, licentiousness and throat cutting. Come Adelaide's Cauldron Black Ram and their sophomore effort, Slubberdegullian. T’ain’t Johnny Depp. T’ain’t the autumn wind neither. The sounds you’d expect to follow 'round vitamin-deficient, lice-infected, rictus grinning criminals. The odor of brothels and briny breath brought via bilious grog-soaked wretchings comport the tails of one Black Douglass and his internal conquests. Words incomprehensible, assuredly under the influence, leave it to song titles like “Blunderbuss,” and “Satanic Whores in Bestial Brothels” to speak for many a bloodshot, brawlin' and ballin’ evening which could be had today any day of the week in the right tavern, here given a salty spin. There’s little particularly pirate-like about the music see, not in the romantic sense, and what is is more indirect or subtle, relegated to the background in the sound of cutlasses sharpening, planks creeking under boots, surly mutterings and cannon blasting (more like an early Sigh album than anything else) or more musically, through the marauding stomp in the above track of devilish bedding or the gradual, rolling entrance of “Black Market Trade of Whore and Blade,” coming into focus like a Jolly Roger on the horizon. ‘Cuz whether one writes of drums as poundin’ on empty barrels of rum, vocals as soggy ghosts on the galleon or guitar a gut rumble of spoiled upchuck, all sounds like a bizarre mix of Heavy Metal, Black and Death with nods to frequent purveyor’s of such arrangements as Grand Belial’s Key. On the other hand, several tracks, including the instrumental “Black Douglass,” do earn distinction apart from the most obvious references. But while the best of what’s on hand is so far preserved by the fact the music could easily be divorced from gimmick, others, like the throw away interlude “Rats,” and the disappointingly half-assed psych-styled album closer “Cave,” make clear that CBR could potentially do much more even as they unearth some treasure on these frequently plundered shores.
