Briton Rites - For Mircalla

 May 27 2010 at 07:01:42 AM

“Love will have its sacrifices.” Briton Rites’ debut, For Mircalla, culls the wealth of its subject matter from Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 gothic novel, Carmilla. Vampirism, hereditary curse, madness, phantasmagoria, death, and the supernatural all figure prominently and carefully in Le Fanu’s work and serve appropriate and extraordinary thematic for this southern trio. Extrapolation isn’t dissimilar from slightly removed Doom Metal revivalists Iron Man, which automatically sets foundation within Black Sabbath’s self-titled release, with a concentration on the less gimmicky tunes, viz., “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” “Sleeping Village,” “Warning.”

Every other band in French cuffs and black denim does this, you know, but doing “it” well is a parlor trick rarely seen, much less enjoyed. Credit prowess here, prudence, too, of knowing when to push the envelope and when to sit back and simply let signifiers signify: Evoking mood, spirit, a consuming and complex “otherness” once only ascribed judiciously to scant Heavy Metal offspring. Guitarist Howie Bentley is integral bedrock here, working up titanic riffs that bandy usual theatrical detritus: Steel, blood, fire, death. Wealth of these folks usually fated to Guitar Center bondage, selling more “DJ Kits” than classical axes these days. Small hours find Bentley working Iommi and Malmsteen tab from the “house acoustic.”

Served him well, evidentially. Bandmates Phil Swanson (vox) and Corbin King (battery) play their parts convincingly also; Swanson particularly, whose limited voice does much with little, straddling six million degrees of tangential separation from Ozzy to Peter Murphy. (Kinda overriding trope, here, ex uno plura, etc.) That the band is not only able, but also wildly successful at crafting epic tunes (three songs clock in at 10 minutes+) from campy prose and fossilized conceptual apparatus is feat quietly celebrated by a few, damaged individuals. Raise your flagons, ingrates.

this is pretty cool. IMHO Iron Man has a bit more swing to them. but overall this is pretty enjoyable.
