The transformation of Blut aus Nord from little-known Black Metal group to herald of a new and “forward-thinking” music seems at last to have settled down since the release of their breakthrough album,
The Work Which Transforms God (2003). While still received with a measure of excitement, the band’s recent experiments with Godflesh inspired industrialized trance music and the pedantic serialism of last year’s
M.O.R.T. appears to have let down the once great promise of their arrival. On their latest disc,
Odinism, the band demure slightly and with mixed results.

A late arrival to the grim tea party, Ash Pool’s founder, Dominic Fernow – modest peddler of curiosities at the NY-based Hospital Productions record store and captain of audible ship wrecker, Prurient – turns now from career directions of “noise” to music of structure, though still without center.

Those lucky enough to witness Malignancy on stage, watching vocalist Danny Nelson run through his array of crazed mannerisms, cutting through the sea of sterility on display like a long-haired shark-fin, know that they have long been one of the few bright spots of New York’s dwindling Death Metal scene.
